i improvised the first verse to this song by literally just singing over the backing track and seeing what came out. i realised later that i was bizarrely writing about a holocaust survivor. after then doing some research on the subject i came across a survivor's reaction to arriving at the notorious auschwitz concentration camp. i adapted his thoughts and others into the remaining lyrics...i hope i've done them justice...

i'm pleased to report that all the names i read out at the end of the track are those of survivors, many of whom lived to a ripe old age...
